Co-Curricular

We offer abundant cultural and sporting opportunities, and respect the actor, the musician and the debater just as much as the sportsman. In fact, they are often the same person, because we have always fostered the development of the all-round boy.

There are many choral and instrumental performance groups, some in association with our sister school, Waitaki Girls’ High School.  These include Orchestra, Concert Band and Jazz Band.  There are six choirs, one from each house, an auditioned Small Choir of high quality, and an open-entry Big Choir which attracts over 100 boys each year.  These groups all undertake at least one local or regional tour annually.

Skilled tuition is available in a variety of instruments.

Major musical productions with Waitaki Girls’ are renowned for their quality.  The most recent was Grease performed earlier this year.

The Kapa Haka group performs with pride and adds mana to special school occasions.  Our Pasifika community is also thriving, entering competitions from speech to Polyfest where they are always well received.

We also offer a comprehensive sporting programme, excellent coaching from staff and local sports people, and outstanding facilities.

Sport is optional, but we encourage every student to become involved, and help the diffident to find confidence, and the right sport.  Our participation rate far exceeds the national average.  Although traditional sports remain strong, other more minor sports are incredibly popular. All sports results are communicated to assembly each week.

In addition to local competitions, summer and winter inter-school exchanges are held with King’s High School, Timaru Boys’ High School and St Kevin’s College.

Waitaki has a proud history of achievement in many sporting codes.  Teams compete in regional and national tournaments of most codes and have gained a national reputation in some.  Many of our students are selected for regional and national age-level representative sides.

Sport has huge benefits for boys.  They make new friends, grow in confidence and develop physical skills.  They also develop good sportsmanship, and learn about competition, teamwork, discipline, initiative, and how to win or lose with good grace.  In short, sport is character-building.
