Waitaki Boys' has an active Arts & Cultural Activities programme, and our students regularly perform and compete at local and regional events.

The Arts

Waitaki Boys' offers many opportunities for our young men to try the Arts.

We have a purpose built auditorium equipped with lighting and sound. We use this for our annual interhouse Scrano competition. The boys write and perform their own drama, perform 2 songs and a Haka.

Bi-annually we present a show with our sister school Waitaki Girls', some of our previous shows have been Grease and High School Musical.

We have an annual Talent Quest competiton and a Mid Winter concert where our, world famous in North Otago, 'Big Choir' of usually 100ish boys performs for local primary schools and then at an evening concert in conjuction with the  Oamaru Youth Orchestra and Concert Band.

In addition to this our boys are offered free music lessons in a range of instruments from the guitar to the bag pipes.

We also encourage public speaking and have an annual junior speech competition, one in Year 9 and one in Year 10. This ties in nicely with our Scrano speech competition and the prestigious Robert Falcon Scott speech award.

Our school has amazing art and music departments where creativity can be unleashed in a range of forms.

The Arts make our boys all-round Waitakian's. We are very proud of the traditions that enable us to be able to offer these experiences to all who wish to take up the opportunities.

Cultural

Pasifika

Our Pasifika group sets the standard and the support programme for Pasifika students is second to none.

A highlight of the year for our Pasifika boys is the polyfest day in Dunedin, a lot of work and commitment goes into preparing for the performances, both from the boys and their families. See below for the Waitaki Boys' Polyfest performance in 2021.

Kapa Haka

We have a combined kapa haka group, Te Au o te Waitaki, with Waitaki Girls’ High School. Currently, we meet weekly where we learn waiata, haka, and practice towards performances within our community. We aim to create whanaungatanga within our rōpū to give our members a sense of belonging.
